In a recent art piece Oliver Curtis has managed to create a witty and thoughtful set of photographs of some of the most famous sites in the world - no mean feat given how often they have been snapped or sketched into 2D existence! How has he done this? Curtis has stood with his back to the monument itself and captured an insightful moment of what lies behind, or rather opposite our most prized works of art.
Oliver’s series is called Volte-face and in discussion with online magazine It’s Nice That, he explains that the collection
“invites you to turn around and see a new aspect of the over-photographed sites of the world – to send your gaze elsewhere and to favour the incidental over the monumental.”
The project takes in such stalwarts as the Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids of Giza, Mona Lisa at the Louvre and Stonehenge. Mixing the absurd and the humane the pictures not only inform the atmosphere around the places themselves, they also say something about how the sacred mixes with the everyday.
